How HeatPick Scores Reviews

HeatPick scores are built around UK installation reality — not brochure claims. We assess performance at low flow temperatures, realistic ownership experience, support strength, and value over time.

Quick view: Performance 30% • Efficiency 25% • Support 20% • Value 15% • Noise 10%

Our scoring principles

UK reality first

We prioritise how products behave in typical UK installs: retrofit constraints, lower flow temperatures, noise implications, and practical commissioning.

Systems, not boxes

A heat pump’s outcome depends on design and commissioning. Scores assume a competent installation with proper heat loss calculations and suitable emitters.

Long-term ownership

Support, parts availability, warranty clarity and serviceability matter. We reward brands and setups that reduce ownership stress.

Transparent weighting

We publish weightings so readers understand what drives the overall score. We avoid scoring systems that are easy to game.

Category weights

Not all factors matter equally in real life. Performance and efficiency drive comfort and running costs, so they carry the most weight.

Noise10%

Why noise isn’t weighted higher

Noise matters, but it’s highly installation-dependent. Placement, boundaries and commissioning affect real-world outcomes. A quieter unit cannot compensate for poor system design.

What each category means

Performance (30%)

Comfort and stability at low flow temperatures, cold-weather behaviour, defrost impact, and suitability for typical UK retrofit constraints.

Efficiency (25%)

Realistic seasonal efficiency expectations in properly designed systems, running cost implications, and how sensitive outcomes are to system setup.

Support (20%)

UK parts availability, installer familiarity, warranty clarity, service response and the manufacturer’s real presence in the UK market.

Value (15%)

Installed cost relative to outcomes, feature set, likely lifetime ownership cost, and whether the product represents a sensible spend for most households.

Noise (10%)

Claimed vs realistic noise behaviour, suitability for tighter plots, and how flexible placement is likely to be in typical UK installs.

What we don’t score

We don’t reward unnecessary complexity. Features only score if they improve outcomes for real households.

Important assumptions

HeatPick scores assume a competent installation. If any of the below are missing, outcomes can differ significantly.

Expected best practice

  • Room-by-room heat loss calculation
  • Emitter sizing for low flow temperatures
  • Correct weather compensation setup
  • Noise/placement assessment
  • Thorough commissioning and homeowner handover

Common reasons performance disappoints

  • Oversized/undersized unit choice
  • High flow temperatures due to emitters not upgraded
  • Poor control setup or disabled weather comp
  • Rushed commissioning
  • Unclear handover leading to wrong user settings

FAQs

Are HeatPick scores based on lab tests?

No. We consider lab information, but the score is primarily about UK real-world installation outcomes and ownership.

Can two installers get different results with the same heat pump?

Yes. System design, emitter sizing and commissioning can change comfort and running costs dramatically.

Will the scoring system change?

It may evolve as the market changes, but we keep it consistent and document any meaningful methodology updates.
